The Property

This expansive estate presented an opportunity to transform a steep, underutilized backyard into a functional, resort-style outdoor living environment. Working in collaboration with the project team, Ed Castro Landscape (ECL) designed and constructed a cohesive series of outdoor spaces that extend seamlessly from the home down to the existing tennis court. The vision was to create a layered, high-end landscape that maximized usability while elevating the property’s overall aesthetic.

The design introduces terraced lawn and patio areas, a custom pool with integrated spa and waterfall feature, and a fully appointed pool house – each element thoughtfully positioned to create a natural flow between levels while maintaining a sense of openness and luxury.

Challenges & Successful Solutions

The primary challenge was the significant grade change between the home and the tennis court, which limited functionality and accessibility. ECL addressed this by reimagining the slope as a series of structured terraces, using retaining walls and carefully engineered transitions to create usable outdoor spaces at multiple elevations.

These terraces allowed for the integration of distinct yet connected environments, including entertainment patios, lawn areas, and the pool deck. The pool and spa were strategically placed as a central focal point, with a waterfall feature enhancing both visual appeal and the auditory experience of the space. The addition of a pool house further supports the functionality of the area, providing convenience and reinforcing the property’s resort-like atmosphere.

Careful attention was given to circulation, ensuring smooth transitions between the home, terraces, and tennis court through integrated stairs and pathways. The result is a once-unusable hillside transformed into a dynamic, multi-level outdoor living space that balances structural complexity with refined design.
